¿Qué hace tan diferente Menorca del resto de islas?

 

Que Menorca es mágica y sea altamente atractiva para tantas y tantos viajeros que eligen venir a descubrirla o volver a disfrutarla es un hecho, y que 9 de cada 10 personas que recorre sus rincones y descubre su gran legado histórico y natural acaban enamorándose de ella , es una realidad.

Pero, ¿cómo puede ser este flechazo? Menorca es como es a día de hoy por un conjunto de circunstancias que la han llevado a mantener su esencia y la personalidad que la caracteriza. Casualidad o no, lo que sí es indiscutible es el trabajo y la sensibilidad de toda la sociedad por conservar sus raíces.

Menorca es una isla protegida y no por casualidad. Detrás de esta realidad hay una gran labor de profesionales y toda una sociedad que ha sabido poner las cosas en su sitio. Y aunque pudo haber sido peor, Menorca sigue conservando su esencia a pesar de su transformación en los últimos 20 años. Si hablas con cualquier menorquín te contará que la isla ha cambiado mucho en poco tiempo. La evolución es vital, pero puede llegar a ser letal si no se hace con orden y coherencia. Menorca es diferente a sus islas hermanas, entre otras razones, porque se ha sabido reaccionar a tiempo a esta evolución descontrolada conocida como turismo de masas. Aquí a Menorca el turismo llegó casi dos décadas más tarde y eso se nota, es una de las principales causas que dan respuesta a por qué Menorca todavía es tan diferente al resto de islas del mediterráneo. Debido a esta gran transformación en tan poco tiempo, en Menorca se tomaron medidas y decisiones consiguiendo que a día de hoy, estas transformaciones en el territorio, y en consecuencia en toda una sociedad y cultura, están en gran medida limitadas.

La zoonificación de Menorca, tanto la zona marina como la terrestre delimita las zonas que pueden explotarse y las que no y gran parte de la isla se encuentra bajo alguna figura de protección. Pero no siempre fue así, Menorca estuvo en el punto de mira de constructores y arquitectos, hubo grandes proyectos urbanísticos alrededor de prácticamente toda la costa de la isla. Proyectos que finalmente no prosperaron (algunos sí), gracias a la reacción y lucha de la sociedad y organismos menorquines. Los frutos de esta lucha incansable son trascendentales: en 1993 Menorca es declarada Reserva de la Biosfera por la UNESCO. Ésto no es una figura de protección, es un reconocimiento por el equilibrio de cómo ha evolucionado una sociedad creando el menor impacto en su entorno natural, además de cómo se han conservado los vestigios de las diferentes culturas que habitaron o dejaron huella en la isla y sobretodo de cómo todo esto ha dado personalidad y carácter a una sociedad que ha día de hoy sigue siendo auténtica. Pues a partir de este reconocimiento sí se integra la isla dentro de programas y se crean leyes donde sí queda protegida, y desde donde se enfocan planes territoriales para la ordenación de los suelos y delimitación urbanística frente a la conservación de los espacios naturales.

La declaración de Reserva de la Biosfera por la UNESCO en 1993, figura en torno la cual gira a día de hoy la conservación de la identidad del pueblo menorquin, fue el inicio. A continuación se declaró el Parque Natural de s’Albufera des Grau en 1995, ampliándose en 2003 de la zona terrestre abarcando también la zona marina. Se integró a Menorca en la red europea Natura 2000, figura que tiene por objetivo la preservación de los espacios naturales, flora y fauna (red ZECS y ZEPA), y en el mismo año se aprueba el Plan Especial de Camí de Cavalls, que tiene como objetivo determinar y consolidar las cara cterísticas físicas y esenciales del camino, un camino histórico que atraviesa los diferentes espacios y paisajes naturales de la isla. En 2001 se aprueba la ley de Encinares Protegidos. nivel Balear, en 1991 se aprueba la ley sobre los espacios ANEI, siglas de Espacios Naturales de Especial Interés, donde se trabaja por preservar y gestionar espacios naturales frágiles dentro del contexto Reserva de la Biosfera. Esto en la zona tierra, pero además desde 1999 se trabaja por la conservación también del medio marino. La declaración de Reservas Marinas tiene por objetivo identificar, proteger, conservar y regenerar la gran biodiversidad del mar. La Reserva Marina del Norte con más de 5.000 ha declaradas en 1999 o La Reserva Marina de l’Illa de l’Aire de asi 720 ha reconocida durante este año 2019, ha hecho que Menorca sea a día de hoy la mayor reserva marina del mediterráneo. Esto sí son figuras que protegen el gran patrimonio natural tanto marino como terrestre. Detrás de ellas hay organismos y personas que lucharon y luchan cada día porque la conservación de Menorca sea la prioridad principal.

Una de las bases del discurso de JSM, es explorar sin molestar, descubrir sin alterar y crear conciencia. Cuando nos preguntan qué es lo que hace tan diferente a Menorca de las otras islas, explicamos cómo fue y pudo haber sido de no ser por la lucha incansable de toda una sociedad, y lo importante de seguir contribuyendo a un modelo cultural, natural, alternativo y sostenible. Mostranos lo importante de practicar un turismo responsable, viajar con ética, en equilibrio y sin poner en peligro el patrimonio de Menorca.
